September 15, 2003
Dear NSA-NYC Friends,
Yes, this has been quite a summer. We all know what has been going on in the
world with continuing hostilities abroad and with problems with the economy at
home. When you receive this, we will have commemorated the second anniversary
of 9/11.
As a way to stand up to violence, we are getting on with our lives. For me
the highpoint was going to our NSA national convention in New Orleans. I was
able to meet in person with my incredible NSA mentor, Chris Clarke-Epstein who
has been so supportive of my work.
I spent lots of time with chapter members, for instance floating down the
Missisissippi with Rosie Horner and her husand Ray, and George Silverman on a
dinner/dixieland steamboat cruise; going to a private dinner at Arnaud's with NSA
friends from all over the country; and the Cigar Peg bash at a restaurant on
Bourbon Street which was our only chance to hear Dale Irvin carry on(I hear
he'll be back at next year's meetings).
So start saving now to go to Phoenix next summer, or to one of the Winter
Workshops.
And oh yes, there were the excellent general and breakout sessions. You'll
find recommendations for tapes on favorite sessions in this newsletter.
The other memorable event was the big blackout of 2003. And where were YOU
when the blackout happened? I was right here safe at home, and grateful not to
be in an elevator or in the subway.
You'll find several new features in this newsletter. The largest new category
is Announcements from the Board. We hope this will continue to open up
communication between the board and all the members. The board is here to serve YOU.
You'll notice there's a call for Volunteers. Here is your opportunity
to get involved, help the chapter grow, make new friends, get yourself known
so that you can serve on the board in the future, and have fun! Be sure to visit our website often for the latest chapter news.
As we start the new season, happy Jewish New Year whether you're Jewish or
not. It never hurts to find a cause for celebration.
Warmly,
Dottie Burman

1. LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Presidential Polish
by Mary Bryant, NSA-NYTS President 2003-2004
Why is our theme "Polishing the Professional & Enhancing Strategic
Partnerships"? We're all good, yet even fine silver needs to be polished ahead of time
for maximum impact on the guests!
Our industry is constantly changing. According to my MPI colleague and
Bureau Owner, Laurie Meyer, meeting planners are now often booking speakers at
LAST MINUTE, sometimes even a WEEK before the presentation. "Accountability"
seems to be a hot new topic in the curcuit.
What role does accountability play in YOUR area of expertise? How are you
keeping up with the current trends as a professional speaker, trainer, coach or
consultant while continuing to build your contact base? How will you stay
visible?
It's often because of the relationships that were built FIRST, and then
delivering quality and expertise that I've found most all my success in life. It
took 10 years of modeling before being represented by FORD Models here in NYC.
I spoke for TWELVE YEARS before I knew anyone would pay me for what I had to
say. NOW is the time to connect - be prepared, be polished and be known!
At NSA-NYTS we've been working hard to create a long term strategic plan to
advance our chapter to the next level. Through partnerships and invitations to
high performance organizations and individuals we will grow exponentially!
We've got producers and writers from ABC and Fox already on the program.
FAST TRACK, under direction of Ron Karr, will no doubt shine us brighter than
ever before, and with a NEW website underway, we're on target to attract
established clientele as well as innovative, creative entreprenuers!
Do you want to be left behind, sitting at your computer wondering where your
next referral will come from? Or will you join us as we further focus our
business and direction this year? Outta sight, outta mind? - NOT ME ... you'll
see your president standing tall at ALL our meetings. Join me in Polishing the
Professionals & Enhancing Strategic Partnerships!

theme of the convention was to market yourself on many levels.
With the help of FIVE of our most talented chapter members, you can prepare
your own manifesto and begin thinking more precisely about how to position
yourself in the marketplace.
Each expert will speak on a different facet of the industry. To conclude, our
experts will regroup as a panel and be available to answer any questions or
address situations that may puzzle you.
Each expert will speak on a different facet of the industry and teach you how
to establish, position, market, sell, reinforce and price in each facet.

Want to take your career to the next level? Then it's time to fast
track it. The New York Chapter of NSA is putting the final touches on
what promises to be a phemomenal experience enabling all speakers at
every level to acheive tremendous breakthroughs. Three CPAE's have
already committed to running workshops on topics such as presentation
skills, selling systems, selling keynotes and much more. These
workshops are designed as practicums where participants will have hands
on involvement with the speakers. There will be other topics too
including how to write proposals, best practice accounting tips for the
speaking professional and much more.
At our meeting on Sept 20th the program will be announced in full. Make
sure you sign up immediately. Slots will be limited. It's time add polish
and break through.
DEBATE TEAM ADOPTION CEREMONY by Mary Campbell Gallagher (gallagherspeaks@hotmail.com)
Chapter business at the October 18 chapter meeting will include an official
Adoption Ceremony, where our chapter will adopt its own inner-city varsity high
school debate team in the New York Urban Debate League. One of the high
school debaters and the varsity coach will speak during the brief ceremony,
where our president Mary Bryant and board member Mary Campbell Gallagher will
represent the chapter.
REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS (Please contact the chairperson(s) listed).

Della Menechella, Membership Chair (della@dellamenechella.com).
We are looking for volunteers to help make guests and new members feel
welcome at our meetings. Committee members will also occasionally phone prospective
members and invite them to join us at an upcoming meeting.
Mary Campbell Gallagher (gallagherspeaks@hotmail.com)
Following our October 18 meeting, Will Baker, CEO of the Impact
Coalition/New York Urban Debate League, will chair a 15-minute informational meeting for
board and chapter members describing opportunities to serve the young high
school debaters we are adopting. As professionals and role models we can play a
tremendous role in these students' lives.
Volunteer opportunities at debate tournaments include judging competitions
and serving on the college advising desk. Other ideas. Does your college have a
strong debate program? Can you introduce our debaters to the Admissions
Office? The national debate topic this year concerns marine life. Do you have
connections at Woods Hole or a local marine research institute where you could
take our debaters on a field trip to meet marine scientists? Will is going to
list many other ways we can help these inner city high school debaters. Our
commitment to our own high school debate team can make a huge difference for

10. INFORMATION TO SHARE
TIPS DRESSING WELL - Roslyn Rolan (rrolan@imageandetiquette.com)
It is important to always remember that what you wear and the way you
wear it, speaks volumes about who you are. As Roger Ailes said in his book
"You Are The Message", that is the truth. These are the guidelines for
dressing well:
1. Jacket: A jacket will always add instant power and authority to your appearance
2. Quality: Quality of your clothing speaks very softly but makes an instant impact
3. Color: Darker colors have more power and are more formal than lighter colors
4. Comfortable and Appropriate: There is a professional limit to how casual
you should dress for any business related occasion.
5. Accessories: A few quality pieces to coordinate your garments
6. Current in Style and geared to your profession
7. Consistency: Every day counts. People only notice the one or two things
that you didn't do as well, or those scuffed shoes which completely threw
off your polished outfit!
8. Last but not least: there should be a congruency between the image you
convey and what your body language is saying.
