VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR NSA MEMBERS

On behalf of the IMPACT Coalition staff, let me express our sincere thanks for the adoption of Life Sciences Secondary School by your organization.

The IMPACT Coalition is a nonprofit, career development organization that enhances the educational and career opportunities of urban students through training and workplace dynamics. As mentioned at VolunteerMatch.org, the New York Urban Debate League (NYUDL) is one of the programs that IMPACT administers. The NYUDL was formed in 1997 to make policy debate accessible to under-resourced urban high school students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from the skills which the activity develops.

Already, over 2100 kids from more than 45 public schools have debated. Several of our teams have qualified for state and national championships. We are always looking for individuals who have experience in policy debate to:

  • judge at our tournaments
  • facilitate judge training sessions for teachers and parents
  • help students review their work
  • assist at non-NYUDL events
  • provide meeting space for scrimmages and demos between participating schools
I will be describing volunteer opportunities at the NYTSA meeting on October 18.
There is a lot to do at our NYUDL tournaments. We would like to include NAS members who could review personal statements, college applications and help students navigate financial aid considerations.

The College Roundtable and our NYUDL tournaments are not our only volunteer opportunities. Other options that I will describe on Saturday include:
  • Lay judges for Public Forum Debates (no orientation needed)
  • Judges for our junior high school division (minimal training needed)
  • Public presentations for parents, teachers and others advocating debate
  • Assistance at our tournaments with registration, childcare and special services
  • Serving on our Fundraising Committee or Advisory Council
  • Volunteers to speak about their work and opportunities in CLOSEUP
  • sessions
For more information, come to the meeting, talk to me after the meeting on Saturday, or visit our website (www.impactcoalition.org). Thanks again. There are few activities that are as fun and rewarding as this.
We look forward to working with the NSA-NYTSA.
